Cockatoo EV Charger Installation | Zappi 7kW Solar-Aware Charger for Jaecoo J5
Completed in Cockatoo, this residential EV charger installation included supply and installation of a Zappi 7kW single-phase solar-aware EV charger for a Jaecoo J5, with a dedicated EV charging circuit, required protection, CT clamp / monitoring setup where practical, charger commissioning, testing and Certificate of Electrical Safety.
Project Overview
This Cockatoo installation was a residential solar/battery-aware EV charger setup using a Zappi 7kW single-phase charger.
The client needed a dedicated home EV charging solution for a Jaecoo J5, with the charger installed near the existing meter box / switchboard area. Because the property already had solar and battery equipment on site, the installation needed to be scoped carefully so the charger could operate as a normal home EV charger while also allowing for solar-aware charging functionality where the existing system allowed.
The Zappi was selected because it is designed for solar-aware EV charging and can be configured with CT monitoring where practical. This made it a strong fit for a property where solar/battery interaction was an important consideration.
Project Snapshot
Location: Cockatoo, VIC
Property type:Residential

Monitoring: CT clamp / monitoring setup where practical
Outcome: Completed solar-aware EV charging setup with testing, commissioning and Certificate of Electrical Safety.
What the Client Needed
The client needed a dedicated EV charger for daily home charging, but this was not just a basic charger installation.
Because the property had existing solar and battery equipment, the charger needed to be installed in a way that considered the broader electrical setup. A standard non-solar charger may have been enough for basic charging, but it would not have been the best long-term fit for a customer wanting better use of solar generation where the system allows.
The right approach was to install a Zappi charger, provide the required dedicated EV charging circuit, and configure the charger for solar-aware operation where practical.
What We Installed
This project included:
Supply and installation of a Zappi 7kW single-phase EV charger
Dedicated EV charging circuit from the existing switchboard / meter location to the nominated charger location
Required circuit protection for the EV charging circuit
Charger mounting near the existing electrical equipment
CT clamp / monitoring setup where practical
Basic Zappi setup and commissioning
Testing and verification of the EV charging circuit
Certificate of Electrical Safety
The Zappi was installed as a solar-aware setup, meaning it can operate as a normal 7kW home EV charger while also providing solar-aware charging modes where the existing solar/battery system allows.
Why This Setup Worked Well
This setup worked well because it matched the customer’s property, vehicle and energy setup.
For daily use, the Zappi provides a dedicated 7kW home charging solution suitable for regular overnight or at-home EV charging. For future energy optimisation, the charger is designed to support solar-aware charging modes through CT monitoring and configuration where practical.
The installation location also made sense because the charger was positioned close to the existing meter box / switchboard area, helping keep the installation clean and practical.
This is the right way to approach EV charging on homes with solar and battery systems: do not treat the charger as an isolated appliance. The charger, switchboard, solar equipment, battery system and available electrical capacity all need to be considered together.
Solar and Battery Considerations
Where a property has solar and battery equipment, the EV charger installation needs to be scoped carefully.
The Zappi can support solar-aware charging, but the final performance depends on the existing solar inverter, battery system, CT placement, wiring arrangement, charger configuration and how the broader electrical system is set up.
For this installation, the charger was installed with allowance for standard Zappi CT clamp / monitoring setup where practical. Future solar inverter wiring, battery system wiring, battery configuration, third-party energy system configuration or return visits for solar/battery changes are outside the standard EV charger installation scope unless quoted separately.
This distinction matters. A proper EV charger installation should be clear about what is included and what sits outside the standard charger commissioning process.
The Outcome
The finished result was a clean Zappi 7kW residential EV charger installation in Cockatoo, giving the client a dedicated home charging setup for their Jaecoo J5.
The charger was mounted neatly near the existing electrical equipment, commissioned for use, and installed with the required dedicated circuit, protection, testing and Certificate of Electrical Safety.
The client now has a practical home EV charging system that can operate as a normal charger while also supporting solar-aware charging functionality where the existing system allows.
